13. 어린왕자(The Little Prince) 영문으로 읽기

But seeds are invisible.

그러나 씨앗들은 보이지 않는다.

They sleep deep in the heart of the earth's darkness, until some one among them is seized with the disre to awaken.

씨앗들은 씨앗들 중 일부가 깨어나기 위한 욕망에 사로잡힐 때까지 땅의 어둠 속에서 깊이 잠들어있다.

Then this little seed will stretch itself and begin - timidly at first - to push a charming little sprig inoffensively upward toward the sun.

그때 이 작은 씨앗은 스스로 뻗고 해를 향해 위쪽으로 해가 되지 않게 매력적인 작은 잔가지를 밀기 위해 처음엔 조심스럽게 뻗기 시작한다.

 

 

 

 

If it is only a sprout of radish or the sprig of a rosebush, one would let it grow wherever it might wish.

무의 싹이나 장미나무의 어린가지라면, 씨앗이 원하는 곳 어디에서든 자라게 놔둘 것이다. 

But when it is a bad plant, one must destroy it as soon as possible, the very first instant that one recognizes it.

그러나 나쁜 식물일 때, 그 식물은 사람들이 나쁜 식물인 것을 알아차리자마자 빠르게 행성을 파괴한다.

Now there were some terrible seeds on the planet that was the home of the little prince; and these were the seeds of the baobab.

어린 왕자의 집이었던 그 행성에 몇몇의 끔찍한 씨앗들이 있었고, 이 씨앗들은 바오밥나무의 씨앗들이었다.

 

 

The soil of that planet was infested with them.

그 행성의 토양은 바오밥나무들로 들끓었다.

A baobab is something you will never, never be able to get rid of if you attend to it too late.

바오밥나무는 당신이 너무 늦게 그것을 제거하려고 노력한다면 결코 제거할 수 없는 것이다.

It spreads over the entire planet.

밥오밥나무는 행성 전체에 퍼진다.

 

 

It bores clear through it with its roots.

바오밥나무는 뿌리로 행성을 뚫을 때까지 깊은 구멍을 판다.

And if the planet is too small, and the baobab are too many, they split it in pieces...

그리고 행성이 너무 작고 밥오밥나무가 너무 많다면 바오밥나무는 행성을 조각을 내어 쪼갠다.

"It is a question of discipline," the little prince said to me later on.

"그것은 규율의 문제"라고 후에 어린 왕자는 나에게 말했다.

 

 

"When you've finished your own toilet in the morning, then it is time to attend to the toilet of your planet, just so, with the greatest care.

당신이 아침에 화장실에 다녀온 후 그때 가장 정성스러운 돌봄으로 너의 행성의 화장실을 돌봐야 할 시간이다.

You must see to it that you pull up regularly all the baobabs, at the very first moment when they can be distinguished from the rosebushes which they resemble so closely in their earliest youth.

당신은 바오밥나무들이 어린 시절에 매우 밀접하게 닮은 장미나무와 구별할 수 있는 그 순간에 규칙적으로 모든 바오밥나무들을 반드시 뽑아야 한다.

It is very tedious work," the little prince added,"but very easy."

그 일은 매우 지루한 일이지만 매우 쉽다고 어린 왕자가 덧붙였다.
