12. 어린왕자(The Little Prince) 영문으로 읽기

As each day passed I would learn, in our talk, something about the little prince's planet, his departure from it, his journey.

매일이 지나 감에 따라 나는 어린 왕자의 행성, 어린 왕자의 행성으로부터의 출발, 그의 여행에 대한 것을 우리의 대화에서 알아갈 것이다. 

The information would come very slowly, as it might chance to fall from his thoughts.

정보는 어린왕자의 생각들에서 우연히 떨어질 때 매우 느리게 올 것이다.

 

 

It was in this way that I heard, on the third day, about the catastrophe of the baobabs.

나는 세번째 날에 바오밥들의 큰 재해에 대해 들었던 것은 이 방법이다.

This time, once more, I had the sheep to thank for it.

 이 당시, 나는, 한번 더, 그것에 대해 감사하기 위해 양을 가져왔다.

For the little prince asded me abruptly- as if seized by a grave doubt- "It is true, isn't it, that sheep eat little bushes?"

어린 왕자는 중대한 의심에 사로잡힌 것처럼 갑자기 나에게 물어봤다-양이 작은 관목을 먹는 게 사실이야?

 

"Yes, that is true."

맞아, 그것은 사실이야.

"Ah! I am glad!"

아! 나는 기쁘다

I did not understand why it was so important that sheep should eat little bushes.

나는 양이 작은 덤불들을 먹어야만 하는 것이 매우 중요한 이유를 이해하지 못했다.

 

But the little price added: "Then it follows that they also eat baobabs?"

그러나 작은 왕자는 "그리고나서 양들은 또한 바오밥나무들을 먹을까?"라며 덧붙였다.

I pointed out to the little prince that baobabs were not little bushes, but, on the contrary, trees as big as castles" and that even if he took a whole herd of elephants away with him, the herd would not eat up one single baobabs.

나는 바오밥나무들은 작은 덤불들이 없다고 어린 왕자에게 가리켰고, 그러나 대조적으로 성만 한 나무였고, 비록 그가 코끼리 떼를 전부 데리고 갔더라도, 그 무리는 하나의 바오밥나무를 다 먹어치우지는 못할 것이다. 

 

The idea of the herd of elephants made the little prince laugh.

코끼리 떼에 대한 생각은 어린왕자를 웃게 만들었다.

"We would have to put them one on top of the other." he said.

"우리는 코끼리 떼를 다른 바오밥 나무 위에 올려놓아야 할 것이다"라고 말했다.

But he made a wise comment: "Before they grow so big, the baobabs start out by being little."

그러나 어린왕자는 현명한 말을 했다. " 코끼리들이 너무 커지기 전에 바오밥나무들은 작아지기 시작한다.

 

"That is strictly correct," I said.

"그것은 엄밀하게 맞다"라고 나는 말했다.

"But why do you want the sheep to eat the little baobabs?"

"근데 너는 왜 그 양이 작은 바오밥나무들을 먹기를 원하는 거야?"

He answered me at once, "Oh come, come!", as if he were speaking of something that was self-evident.

그는 "오 와봐, 와봐!" 그는 마치 자명한 것에 대해 말하는 것처럼 즉시 나에게 대답했다.

 

And I was obliged to make a great mental effort to solve this problems, without any assistance.

그리고 나는 어떤 도움 없이 이 문제들을 해결하기 위해 어쩔 수 없이 엄청난 정신적인 노력을 했다.

Indeed, as I learned, there were on the planet where the little prince lived- as on all planets- good plants and bad plants

실제로 내가 들은 바와 같이 모든 행성들처럼 어린 왕자가 살던 그 행성은 좋은 식물들과 나쁜 식물들이 있었다.

In consequence, there were good seeds from good plants, and bad seeds from bad plants

결과적으로, 좋은 식물들로부터 좋은 씨앗들이, 나쁜 식물들로부터 나쁜 씨앗들 있었다.
