My drawing was not a picture of a hat.

내 그림은 모자그림이 아니었다.

It was a picture of a boa constrictor digesting an elephant.

내 그림은 코끼리를 소화하고 있는 보아뱀 그림이었다.

 

But since the grown-ups were not able to understand it, I made another drawing.

그러나 어른들이 내 그림을 이해할 수 없었기 때문에 나는 또 다른 그림을 그렸다.

 

I drew the inside of the boa constrictor , so that the grown-ups could see it clearly.

어른들이 명확하게 볼 수 있게 나는 보아뱀의 안쪽을 그렸다.

 

They always need to have things explained.

어른들은 항상 모든 것들이 설명되어져야한다.

The grown-ups' response, this time, was to advise me to lay aside my drawings of boa constrictor , whether from the inside or the outside, and devote myself instead to geography, history, arithmetic, and grammar.

이때 어른들의 반응은 내가 보아뱀의 내부 또는 바깥쪽을 그린 보아뱀 그림들을 버리고, 지리, 역사, 산수, 문법에 충실하도록 충고하는 것이었다.

 

That is why, at the age of six, I gave up what  might have been a magnificent career as a painter.

이런 이유로 6살에 나는 화가로서 엄청난 경력이었을지도 모를 일을 포기했다.

 

I had been disheartened by the failure of my Drawing Number One and my Drawing Number Two.

나는 나의  첫 번째 두 번째 그림의 실패로 인해 낙담했었다.

 

Grown-ups never understand anything by themselves, and it is tiresome for children to be always and forever explaining things to them.

어른들은 결코 스스로의 힘으로 어떤 것을 이해할 수 없고 어린이들이 어른들에게 항상 영원토록 그것들을 설명하는 것은 성가신 일이다.
