6. 어린왕자(The Little Prince) 영문으로 읽기

 

 

He answered me: "That doesn't matter. Draw me a sheep."

그는 나에게 대답했다. 그것은 문제가 아니야. 나에게 양 한 마리를 그려줘

 

But I had never drawn a sheep.

그러나 나는 결코 양을 그릴 수 없었다.

 

So I drew for him one of the two picture I had drawn so often.

그래서 나는 자주 그렸던 두장의 그림 중 한장을 그에게 그려주었다.

 

It was that of the boa constrictor from the outside.

그것은 바깥쪽을 그린 보아뱀 그림이었다.

 

And I was astounded to hear the little fellow greet it with, "No, no, no! 

그리고 나는 그 작은 친구가 그 그림을 아니야, 아니야, 아니야라며 응수하는 소리에 놀랐다.

 

I do not want an elephant inside a boa constrictor.

나는 보아뱀 안의 코끼리를 원하는게 아니야.

 

A boa constrictor is a very dangerous creature, and an elephant is very cumbersome.

보아뱀은 너무 위혐한 생물체고, 코끼리는 너무 커서 거추장스러워

 

Where I live , everything is very small.

내가 사는 곳은 모든 것들이 매우 작아.

 

What I need is a sheep.

내가 필요한 것은 양 한마리야.

 

Draw me a sheep.

나에게 양 한 마리를 그려줘

 

So then I made a drawing.

그래서 그때 나는 그림을 그렸다.

 

He looked at it carefully, then he said

그는 조심스럽게 그림을 보고 말했다.

 

"No. This sheep is already very sickly.

아니아. 이 양은 벌써 너무 병약해(아파 보여).

 

Make me another.

나에게 다른 것을 그려줘

 

So I made another drawing.

그래서 나는 다른 그림을 그렸다.

 

My friend smiled gently and indulgently.

내 친구는 온화하고 관대하게 웃었다.

 

"You see yourself" he said, "that this is not a sheep.

"너 스스로를 봐" 이것은 양이 아니야라며 그는 말했다.

 

So then I did my drawing over once more.

그래서 그때 나는 한 번 더 그림을 그렸다.

 

But it was rejected too, just like the others.

그러나 그 그림도 다른 그림들처럼 거절되었다.

 

"This one is too old. I want a sheep that will live a long time."

이 양은 너무 늙었어. 나는 오래 살 수 있는 양을 원해

 

By this time my patience was exhausted, because I was in a hurry to start taking my engine apart.

이때쯤 나는 멀리 떨어져 있는 엔진을 가져오려고 서둘렀기 때문에 나의 인내심은 고갈되었다.

 

So I tossed off this drawing.

그래서 나는 이 그림을 단숨에 그렸다.

 

And I threw out  an explanation with it.

그리고 나는 그림에 대해 설명해 줬다.

 

"This is only his box. The sheep you asked for is inside."

이것은 오직 양의 상자야. 네가 원하는 양은 이 안에 있어.

 

I was very surprised to see a light break over the face of my young judge.

나는 나의 젊은 심판의 얼굴에 걸린 가벼운 안도를 보고 놀랐다.

 

"That is exactly the way I wanted it!

그것은 정확히 내가 원하던 방법이야
